Future violence and fancy suits5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() Wongin is also the author of John Dies at the End and This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude Don’t Touch It. It encourages binge reading like Netflix encourages binge watching: very, very effectively. I’m keeping my fingers crossed because this book would make a perfect series. Speaking of Netflix, Futuristic Violence & Fancy Suits has apparently been picked up as a Netflix show, which is awesome and maybe even true (the internet hasn’t said anything about it since last year). Like talking too much about the news, versus the latest episode of whatever on Netflix. But at least with non-fiction, I can tell myself that it’s worth annoying people. Actually, no, no one likes to hear about any books. People don’t like to hear about novels, unless they too are reading that novel. They leave you with smart sounding anecdotes, factoids and, if I’m lucky, some real, durable knowledge that makes a difference in my day to day decision making life. ![]() That’s partly because when I sit down and read for a while, I want to get up and feel like I’ve accomplished something. If you know me, or click through a few pages of the books I’ve read, you’ll notice that I don’t read too many novels. So, for the duration of this book review, I’m going to refer to him as Wongin. I think that might be his whole name, actually. Futuristic Violence & Fancy Suits is a novel by David Wong, AKA, Jason Pargin. ![]()

Longitude dava5/26/2023 ![]() ![]() But he did so, and he did succeed, where all others had failed.īeing a student of the history of technological development I was already vaguely familiar with the problems of developing accurate timepieces, as well as the difficulty of producing a clock which was accurate and rugged enough to be used at sea to find longitude. In the process he had to abandon much of what he had already accomplished in order to succeed. For John Harrison’s greatest invention – something quite unlike anything he had built to that point – was made when he was in his seventies, and required him to take two long steps to one side… and move a century forward. It also disproves the conventional wisdom that creativity is an activity solely of the young. ![]() ![]() The story of John (Longitude) Harrison disproves this. It has also been criticized as a romantic fantasy. The image of the lone genius, prevailing against the odds to make a better world, is an attractive one.
